A week in black and white

Monday 7 November

The week begins with a much-loved Juventus player celebrating his half century. Despite only featuring for one season, Alejnikov won a place in the hearts of the Bianconeri faithful by winning the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia following his transfer from Dinamo Minsk. The midfielder from the Soviet Union made 50 appearances for Dino Zoff’s side in their march towards a cup double.

Conte’s side enjoy the first of two days off following yesterday’s postponed fixture against Napoli. There’s good news from the sporting body who declare that Juventus will have a full complement of players available for the clash against Palermo, to be contested on Sunday 20 November.

And a further announcement in the evening confirms the rearranged date of the encounter at the San Paolo. The Bianconeri will travel to Naples on Tuesday 29 November, with the fixture falling between Sunday’s away game against Lazio and the following Sunday’s visit of Cesena.

Tuesday 8 November

Juventus maintains its position at the forefront of social technologies by becoming the first Italian football club to use Google+. The recently launched social network will be implemented in conjunction with the club’s existing social media platforms, further enhancing the Bianconeri’s interaction with all four corners of the globe.

News from Naples states Juventus’ non involvement with the matters charged relating to Calciopoli.

Wednesday 9 November

An important day for all Juventus fans worldwide as talismanic skipper Alessandro Del Piero celebrates his 37th birthday. However, it’s business as usual for the striker, who regroups in Vinovo for the team’s first workout of the week, minus those on international duty. Del Piero receives a warm welcome at Juventus Center from a group of fans sporting banners dedicated to their idol.

Gianluca Pessotto returns from Liverpool having delivered a 30-minute presentation on Juventus Football Club’s commitment to youth. The Bianconeri legend and Vice Director of Youth outlines the club’s desire to nurture its home-grown talent at the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) workshop.

Thursday 10 November

The celebrations continue as Marco Storari welcomes the arrival of his second son into the world. The goalkeeper’s wife, Veronica, gives birth to Piergiorgio, a brother for Tommaso.

The Juventus Stadium Tours, opened last week by Pavel Nedved, are proving their popularity as it emerges that over 1,000 visitors have viewed the Bianconeri’s new home in the first seven days. And the resounding response looks set to continue, with a further thousand supporters signed up to visit before the end of the month.

Back in Vinovo, Juventus follow up last week’s four-goal friendly exploits with another four in a workout against Savona. Antonio Conte makes the most of the opportunity to view Giaccherini back in match action and field several Primavera prospects. Del Piero gives the Bianconeri the lead, with Gabriel Appelt and Fabio Grosso adding to the score after the break. Giaccherini caps off his comeback by finding the target in the dying minutes.

The winger spoke at the final whistle, indicating his pleasure at returning to the fold: “After being out through injury it’s been important to play at a good pace, even if it’s just in a friendly. Of course, it’s not the same intensity as a game with three points up for grabs, but these tests are still extremely valuable, because they let you get minutes under your belt, and help you to put the manager’s ideas into practice.”

While the Bianconeri toil on the pitch, a special guest stands on the sidelines alongside former team-mate Pavel Nedved. Brazilian midfielder Emerson, a mainstay of Fabio Capello’s 2005 and 2006 Scudetto winning sides, is back in Turin and the ‘Puma’ believes that Juventus are on the right track: “They’ve got the right mentality and step by step I believe that they’re getting back to be the Juve of old. The club’s bought some great players who have immediately hit the ground running.”

In Turkey, Luca Marrone masterminds the Italian Under 21 side to a fourth successive victory in their bid for a place in this summer’s European Championships. The young midfielder plays 90 minutes as the Azzurri top the group with two games in hand over their opponents.

Friday 11 November

Arturo Vidal and Andrea Barzagli are back in Vinovo following their return from international duty.  The Chilean midfielder carries out the full workout with the group, while the defender conducts an individual training program to shake off the muscle contraction which forced his early departure from Italy’s training camp.

Alex Manninger then joins Valeria Ciardiello in the studio for this week’s edition of ‘Filo Diretto’. The goalkeeper confesses that Conte’s work is striking the right chord with the players: “I like this Juventus side. We play a modern brand of football and after two less than brilliant years, I think that we’re ready to achieve important results.”

The evening sees a whole host of Bianconeri representing their nations. Goals from Balotelli and Pazzini hand Italy a 2-0 win in Poland, with Gigi Buffon saving a penalty four minutes from time to maintain a clean sheet. Alongside the goalkeeper, Chiellini and Marchisio appear for 90 minutes, while Pirlo is replaced by Thiago Motta shortly after the interval. Pepe and Matri make second half appearances from the bench after their recall to the national setup.

Elsewhere, Marcelo Estigarribia plays 80 minutes in Paraguay’s 2-1 World Cup qualifier success over Ecuador. Stephan Lichtsteiner’s Switzerland contest a goalless draw with Holland, while Milos Krasic’s Serbia dip against Mexico. In the European Championship play-offs, Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic witnesses his side suffer a two-goal defeat in the Czech Republic, with the return leg scheduled for next Tuesday.

Saturday 12 November

While Italy coasted to success in Poland last night, Leonardo Bonucci remained in Turin. The defender admitted his disappointment at missing out, but insists he is ready to work hard to reclaim his place in the squad: “Nothing is obvious in football, and I’ve never taken anything for granted. Obviously, I’d have preferred to form part of the selection, and I’ve been a bit surprised about the coach’s decision, but I’ll work hard to turn these negative thoughts into positive feelings in future.”

In the afternoon, Marco Baroni’s Primavera rue a missed opportunity to overtake leaders Fiorentina, having been handed an unlikely favour from neighbours Torino. The Granata beat the Viola 1-0, but the young Bianconeri fail to take full advantage in Novara. It starts well for Juventus, with Beltrame coming back to haunt his former employers by putting his new side ahead from the spot. However, Baroni’s young guns also pay the penalty soon after and the hosts secure a share of the spoils from eight yards.

Sunday 13 November

The morning brings a memorable victory for the Giovanissimi over rivals Torino. Udoh hits both goals, with Claudio Gabetta’s side staving off a second half Granata fightback to gain three priceless points.

But the second 2-1 result of the day fails to go in Juventus’ favour as the Allievi suffer a narrow defeat at the hands of Empoli. The spirited showing from Del Rosso's side proves not to be enough, as their opponents snatch victory through a second half winner.

Buffon delivers moving speech

Gigi Buffon will not forget this day, Tuesday 15 November 2011, for quite some time. Tonight’s game between Italy and Uruguay will see the goalkeeper equal Dino Zoff’s record of 112 international caps (see news).

But there's also another reason why today will live long in Gigi's mind. He earlier assumed the role of group spokesman throughout the course of the national squad’s visit to the Quirinale in Rome. And the goalkeeper delivered a touching speech in front of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.

A visibly moved Buffon spoke clearly and concisely, showing the sincerity befitting a true Azzurri captain: “It’s an enormous honour to be here with you, President, for this greeting ahead of this evening’s game to celebrate 150 years of a united Italy. We’re still a young population and country and this sometimes causes us to slip up. These people need the support of a united political class, with an appropriate culture and responsibility who represent them along with an accountable government characterised by transparency and ability. We’re all waiting for the answers in order to begin again following moments of great difficulty. We’ll always look to do what we can on the pitch to honour the name of Italy, no matter what. President, now the toughest test is yours, and we’ll support you.”

Ready for the off

The countdown towards the Bianconeri’s next fixture has officially begun. Almost three weeks after the momentous 2-1 away victory over Inter, Antonio Conte’s men will be back in action on Sunday, when they entertain Palermo at Juventus Stadium.

Juventus assembled in Vinovo this afternoon following two days off. The group was still without the players on international duty, who tonight will contest their final fixtures before returning to Turin.

Despite their absence, Conte put the remainder of his squad through a rigorous double session, consisting of morning and afternoon workouts. Tomorrow will see the Bianconeri on the training ground at 2:30pm.

Krasic’s Serbia slip up in Honduras

2011 has no great finale for Serbia. Following their failure in qualifying for the deciders for Euro 2012, Krasic and his teammates suffered from a double defeat in the two friendlies played in Central America.
Following their slip up in Mexico occurred on Friday, yesterday in Honduras Serbia were beaten 2-0. Both the hosts’ goals occurred in the first half. Milos Krasic got on the pitch at the beginning of the second half, when the result was almost decided.

Marchisio, October MVP

The midfielder spent a wonderful October. Marchisio started the autumn scoring a double against Milan and closed the month as the match-winner in the clash against Inter. In the middle, his first goal wearing the Azzurri’s shirt also occurred, namely on 7 October against Serbia.

In addition, he also showed brilliant performances which allowed him to be awarded as MVP. The choice was made by the Juventus Members who shared their passion and competence on the Bianconeri’s official community. One of them will have the chance to present the award to Claudio on next Sunday at the Juventus Stadium, on the occasion of the game against Palermo just after the usual warm-up before the match

Agnelli: “A more than expected appeal”

“Today has simply been the follow-up to what we said on 10 August at the press conference which was held. We began what we had already clearly announced, with a list of seven actions. Today we’ve completed one of them.”

Andrea Agnelli has cleared up Juventus’ position regarding the appeal made to the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio. “Our action is intended to check the administrative actions carried out by the Federation in 2006 and 2011,” continued the President. “Inter? I’d like to define them as a side effect. Our research is concerned with the equality of treatment and relates to who was judging in 2006 and 2011. We require clarity with FIGC [Italian Football Federation]. There are only two options: mistakes have either been made before or after.”

Agnelli spoke on the subject from the Teatro Regio in Parma, where he received the Sport e Lavoro prize. The 35th edition of the honour was awarded to him and his cousin John Elkann by the panel of the Internazionale Sport Civiltà. “When this award first came to life, so did we,” joked the President who, thanks to a video, had the opportunity to relieve the emotions felt during Juventus Stadium’s opening ceremony. “I’ve watched the video again with pleasure because I was in a daze on that particular day. To build the new stadium we began midway through the 90s, in 2006 we were ready, but we had to stop. We began work in 2008, with the economic crisis in full swing, and our act of courage has paid off, given that all games have been sold-out up until this point”.

The President then reiterated his regard for Del Piero: “There have been different interpretations of what I said at the Shareholders’ Assembly. In reality, we had already agreed that last summer’s renewal would be his last contract with Juventus and my only desire was to repay him with the best possible tribute. I’m now in Parma, and we opened the stadium against the team from this city. Moreover, it was against Parma where he had a special moment: it was his first year at Juventus, he scored a hat-trick and instead of celebrating he sought to credit who provided the assist. Well, that gesture shows exactly what a champion he is. Alessandro has contributed to Juventus’ history and the doors to the club and my office will always be open to him. Del Piero and Juventus are one thing and this can only be said about him, Boniperti, Platini and very few others.”

Chiellini sets the record straight

“I believe that nobody over these years could ever doubt my attachment to Juventus and the club’s fans.” Giorgio Chiellini is understandably surprised at how certain quotes have been reported from Italy’s training camp today. The defender sought to express his disappointment and set the record straight regarding an alleged “I couldn’t care less about the Scudetto and Juventus” comment.

“I think that there’s honestly very little to say, it’s just been another occasion in which less than professional people have looked to gain recognition,” wrote Giorgio on his official website. “It’s absurd to reiterate it but I believe that nobody over these years could ever doubt my attachment to Juventus and the club’s fans! Now let’s enjoy tomorrow night’s game at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome where I’ve never played with the national team before. Then we’ll start to think about the Juventus games that lie ahead.”

Buffon still 'proud' of Azzurri

Gigi Buffon was disappointed he could not celebrate his 112th cap with a victory, but is “proud” of Italy’s performance.

“My next objective is just to play as much as possible for the Nazionale, as that always has been, is and will be a great source of pride to wear the Azzurri jersey,” he said after matching Dino Zoff’s total.

“I’ve done it 112 times and hope to do so for many more. Let’s say we’ll finish at 150! In all honesty, my objective isn’t to become the most capped player. The real thing is to keep playing, as that will mean I am still a competitive and respected goalkeeper who earns his spot.

“In a few years we’ll have to look at the old birth certificate and give space to those coming through the ranks.

“After all the injuries I’ve had in the last 18 months, it’s good to feel so strong and train consistently. I am really enjoying my football again.”

Uruguay scored after just three minutes when taking advantage of a defensive error and Buffon feels concentration was an issue.

“It is always a shame to concede a goal, but with a little more concentration and determination, perhaps we would’ve avoided it. I think maybe if this had not been a friendly, we wouldn’t have let that goal in.

“I always remember games with Uruguay being very tough and with few goals, as they are solid and difficult to break down, especially if you’re unlucky enough to go behind early on.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get the win, but everyone can be proud of the performance and effort we put in. Clearly one cannot be entirely positive after a defeat, but it’s also true to say we held the initiative for 90 minutes and had many chances to draw level, so there was some good among the bad.”

Cesare Prandelli continued to test new tactics, as the Azzurri have to revamp after learning Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano will be out for six months.

“It has been difficult, as we played a certain way for a year and a half withCassano and Rossi, then had to chance our approach due to the different characteristics of the players. It’s a tough job for the Coach,” added Buffon.

“It was certainly a pity to end 2011 with a defeat after we recovered so much credibility and confidence. Our next game is in February, so there will hopefully be time for everyone to get back in shape.”

Juve Calciopoli case rejected

Juventus have received another blow after the TNAS tribunal ruled it was “incompetent” to rule on the 2006 Scudetto.

The Bianconeri had appealed to the National Arbitration Tribunal for Sport when the FIGC declared it could not revoke the 2006 Serie A title from Inter because the statute of limitations had expired.

Juve’s lawyers took the matter to the TNAS, hoping they would act on the new wiretap telephone evidence that emerged during the Naples trial.

“The TNAS, in reference to the controversy between Juventus F.C. SpA / FIGCand F.C. Internazionale Milano SpA, regarding the Federal Counsel’s act of July 18 2011 in rejecting the revocation of the Scudetto for 2005-06, confirm the Tribunal composed of Angelo Grieco, Dario Buzzelli and Enrico De Giovanni declares its incompetence.”

This means the Tribunal also feels it has no jurisdiction over this decision.

Amauri paired with Werder

German club Werder Bremen are showing an interest in forgotten Juventusstriker Amauri, according to reports.

Werder are looking for new attacking options and they are considering a January bid for the centre-forward.

Amauri is available for transfer given that his contract expires in June 2012 and he is not in the plans of Juve boss Antonio Conte.

The Brazilian-born Italian international has not played this season and has been forced to train away from the first team after he refused a summer switch.

Amauri, who is on an incredible €3.8m a season in terms of wages, is also understood to be a target for Tottenham
